Tackling Food Waste
Tackling Food Waste Through Meal Services
By Hiro Noda
Food waste is a serious challenge in Australia. If you are concerned about the food waste, then you have found a right place to give you a new perspective on what we can do about it. The Australian Government estimates food waste costs the Australia $20 billion each year. To put this into perspective, Over 5 million tonnes of food ends up as landfill, enough to fill 9,000 Olympic sized swimming pools! When food is wasted, it means that all the resources and inputs used in the production are also lost. As long as we don’t address this challenge, the market will continue to over supply to meet our demand. To tackle this problem, we want to introduce you to new food industry called Meal Box Services.
Why do we waste food?
Australians love to cook and values home cooking. According to Mccrindle & HelloFresh market research, three in four Australians (74%) are likely to
prepare five or more of their seven weekly dinners at home. But the problem is that Australians are overbuying, overcooking and overeating, which is leading to high volumes of food waste (ABC News Article). Why? Because we don’t plan our meals in advance and check the pantry before heading to the shops! We also love watching cooking shows. It’s wonderful to see people adventure and try new recipes, but we should also think about food waste through buying ingredients that we probably not going to use again!
What is a meal box service & how does it reduce food waste?
Meal box services deliver seasonal ingredients and recipes directly to your door, so that you can enjoy homemade food without thinking about what to cook or waste food through over buying from groceries. The standard is that you choose which meal plans you want (e.g. vegetarian, family size…) and select meals you want to cook from their weekly menu. Simple as that!

Dinnerly Australia – the most affordable meal box in Australia
If cost is the most important factor, then we strongly recommend giving Dinnerly a go. For 3 meals a week for 2 people, you only pay $47.95, which is $12 cheaper than average meal box delivery services. Bestmeals can offer you exclusive discount deal for Dinnerly, where you would only pay starting from $32.95 ($15 off for your fist two orders).
You might be wondering why Dinnerly is so much cheaper? Dinnerly is actually the sister company of Marley Spoon and they achieved cost reduction by doing less marketing, packaging and printing recipes. Their meals are tasty as any other meal box services, so you won’t be disappointed. If you are not too fussy about getting your recipes in an electronic format and less packaging, then Dinnerly is an excellent option.

Drum roll please… my first Dinnerly meal! Malaysian Chicken Curry!
I’m going to confess something here… Dinnerly being the most affordable meal box service, I actually didn’t know what the taste of the meal was going to be like (oh you little faith)… but it was SUPER DELICIOUS! My family loved the flavour and I was really surprised how tasty and easy it was to cook! I felt like I brought sexy back in the kitchen (or may be because I was listening to Justin Timberlake?)
I love Dinnerly recipes, but if you are health conscious, then only thing I would suggest is to add one more extra serving of veggie to make it perfect. For this Malaysian Chicken Curry, I would suggest adding a red capsicum to add colour and variety to the dish.

We cooked Chimichurri, thin beef steaks served with an uncooked condiment of chopped herbs, chilli, garlic, vinegar and oil, evolved in meat-loving Argentina among ex-pat Basques. Endlessly versatile, it can be used as a marinade, sauce or even brushed on bread for grilling!![/vc_column_text]
